QUILT OF VALOR PRESENTATION by NANCY CANN
We were privileged to have Nancy Cann speak at our July Guild Meeting. She is passionate about the Quilts of Valor and is an excellent representative of the program. QOV began in 2003 by Catherine Roberts. Catherine is a mother and quilter whose son was deployed to Iraq at the time. One night she dreamed of a warrior restless during the night due to the rigors of war, then her dream evolved to the same warrior restful and comforted with a quilt wrapped around his shoulders.
Nancy emphasized these quilts are not charity quilts. They are quilts of honor and comfort for service to country. The guidelines want the quilt to be a pristine example to honor the veteran. When presented to our veterans, the desire is for the veteran to feel the gratitude and comfort of a grateful nation.
The fabrics should be red, white, and blue or shades of these colors. The backings should blend and be appropriate to the front. If possible, prepare a pillowcase to accompany the quilt. Prefer French seams on the pillowcase. Send backing and batting with quilt top if you mail to QOV. The label is most important and should include the following:
Name of the quilt (something that moved your heart while you made the quilt)
Who is receiving the quilt (will be added before award)
Where (will be added before award)
When (will be added before award)
Name of quilt maker
Name of long-armed quilter
Name of who prepared binding
Washing instructions: Cold water, color catcher, tumble dry
Your location
Your material purchases for QOV are tax deductible. However, you cannot off-write services such as long-arm quilting or rental of a long-arm machine.
